Batman: The Man Who Laughs: The Deluxe Edition contains three Gotham stories written by Ed Brubaker。 The first story is the title track, if you will。 Set after the events of Batman: Year One by Frank Miller, or more precisely, after the events of Batman and the Mad Monk by Matt Wagner, this one-shot chronicles Batman's first encounter with an absolutely maniacal Joker。 Artist Doug Mahnke gives the book the feel of a horror story。 Absolutely fantastic! The second story included in this deluxe edit Batman: The Man Who Laughs: The Deluxe Edition contains three Gotham stories written by Ed Brubaker。 The first story is the title track, if you will。 Set after the events of Batman: Year One by Frank Miller, or more precisely, after the events of Batman and the Mad Monk by Matt Wagner, this one-shot chronicles Batman's first encounter with an absolutely maniacal Joker。 Artist Doug Mahnke gives the book the feel of a horror story。 Absolutely fantastic! The second story included in this deluxe edition is an Elseworlds graphic novel titled Batman: Gotham Noir which is simultaneously remarkable for being Brubaker's first team-up with artist Sean Phillips as well as being a hardboiled noir story featuring a down-on-his-luck alcoholic former cop by the name of Jim Gordon as the protagonist and a restrained and harrowing use of Batman。 I was enthralled by this story。 It honestly felt like a Criminal story with a peppering of Batman。The third story is an arc from Detective Comics #784-786 titled Made of Wood and features art by Patch Zircher。 This arc features an unlikely team up between Batman and the first Green Lantern, Alan Scott。 Not knowing much about Green Lantern, I initially wasn't too excited about this one but damn it, I got sucked in! This one really leans hard into actual detective work and since Batman is the World's Greatest Detective, that is something that I really appreciated, even though the fake beards he wore kind of reminded me of Who's Harry Crumb? sometimes。 There was an odd feature of the story where Batman doesn't seem to mind outing himself as Batman as long as he is wearing a beard but hey, all Supes has to do to make himself unrecognizable is wear a pair of glasses, so maybe I don't mind the suspension of disbelief much。 This was a fun book and is sure to please any Batman fan or any Ed Brubaker fan。Disclaimer: If you are a Batman fan or an Ed Brubaker fan and you didn't enjoy this, no hard feelings, don't kill the messenger, it's not you it's me, yada yada yada。。。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As mentioned in the other reviews, this book contains two stories, one is the main Joker story and the other is a Batman - Green Lantern one (Detective Comics #786)。 This review is mainly for the main story, The Man Who Laughs。 Timeline wise the story starts off after Year One。 This probably is the first time Joker and Batman meet。 This story does well to show that Batman does not know what to expect of this psychotic criminal。It's here that Batman deduces who the Joker really is and how he came As mentioned in the other reviews, this book contains two stories, one is the main Joker story and the other is a Batman - Green Lantern one (Detective Comics #786)。 This review is mainly for the main story, The Man Who Laughs。 Timeline wise the story starts off after Year One。 This probably is the first time Joker and Batman meet。 This story does well to show that Batman does not know what to expect of this psychotic criminal。It's here that Batman deduces who the Joker really is and how he came into being。 Brubaker does well to show Joker's psychopathic mental state, and certain scenes do give you the chill。 Like this poem in an abandoned bathroom "One by one they hear my call, then the whole town will follow my fall"。 Artwork wise, Doug Mahnke does a fairly good job。 Joker comes out as warped and sadistic。 However, I preferred Bolland's depiction of Joker in The Killing Joke。 He came across more as the psychotic villain we know。All in all, this is a good novel to read especially if you are interested in post Zero Hour continuity。 。。。more

So the "The Man Who Laughs" storyline was pretty entertaining but I didn't care about the rest at all。 So the "The Man Who Laughs" storyline was pretty entertaining but I didn't care about the rest at all。 。。。more

I really don’t get the hype on this one sadly

This is a collection of three Batman stories, which have no connection to each other whatsoever。The first story “The Man Who Laughs” is probably the reason you are reading this collection。 It takes place after “Batman: Year One” in which the caped crusader fights The Joker for the first time。 This was a great introduction to the iconic villain。 Highly recommend。The second story is “Batman Noir” an Elseworlds tale。 It was good。 It admittedly dragged at some points but it was good。 It was mostly f This is a collection of three Batman stories, which have no connection to each other whatsoever。The first story “The Man Who Laughs” is probably the reason you are reading this collection。 It takes place after “Batman: Year One” in which the caped crusader fights The Joker for the first time。 This was a great introduction to the iconic villain。 Highly recommend。The second story is “Batman Noir” an Elseworlds tale。 It was good。 It admittedly dragged at some points but it was good。 It was mostly from the perspective of an alcoholic Jim Gordon in 1949。The final story is “Made of Wood” with guest star Green Lantern, Alan Scott。 It was more fun than the second story。 I’ll be honest: I mostly read this for the Joker story。 The other two arcs were just bonus。 Not bad though。 。。。more

The first story was average, the second was better and more complex。

Alan Green

The first story was a great telling of origin and first conflict with Batman of the Joker, it gave a great background of why the Joker is obsessed with Batman。 The second story with the original Green Lantern Allan Scott was a thrilling mystery and a love the original Green Lantern。

A sequel to YEAR ONE。 We’ve read or seen a million Joker origin stories, though, and all this does is remind me how great some of the others were (particularly Burton’s BATMAN)。

Purists will not like this。 As I am not a purist, and I also happen to be a Green Lantern fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this take on the Dark Knight。

I enjoyed reading this a lot, I think it definitely helped reading this straight after year one! So this book was split into two parts, the first is the main story about Batman’s first encounter with the joker that was teased at the end of year one and takes place just after that。 The second was a separate story about mysterious killing involving the old green lantern。It was very different art in this book but I liked it a lot。 The story did a really good job of portraying the joker as the evil I enjoyed reading this a lot, I think it definitely helped reading this straight after year one! Good modern rework of the original 1940 Joker comic, especially liked how the writer included the 'Joker radio speech' into 21st Century standard。 Modernisation of Batman's first encounter with the joker, Brubaker partially explores the theme of Joker's mysterious origin ('Red Hood') and despite also expressing the complex, and tragic relationship Batman- Joker have, I think Brubaker should have added more on this。 Kind of annoying how short the comic is as well, and misled me to believe the com Good modern rework of the original 1940 Joker comic, especially liked how the writer included the 'Joker radio speech' into 21st Century standard。 Modernisation of Batman's first encounter with the joker, Brubaker partially explores the theme of Joker's mysterious origin ('Red Hood') and despite also expressing the complex, and tragic relationship Batman- Joker have, I think Brubaker should have added more on this。 Kind of annoying how short the comic is as well, and misled me to believe the comic was longer than actually is。 This is because of the added 'Made of Wood' story including the Green lantern。 Yet to read it, might do so one day。 Decent comic though :)。 。。。more

I forgot how much the main story ties to killing joke, not perfect but still a fun read。 I enjoyed all three stories。

* 5 stars strictly for The Man Who Laughs *Great art and great Batman / Joker relationship origin story。

Classic hard-boiled detective thriller。 Batman and Joker are a match made in he(ll)aven。 The Green Lantern add-on was good, too。

Tim

Brubaker knows how to write Batman。 This was a good story that introduced Joker, and started the shift away from year-one style stories where Batman is cleaning up the streets of Gotham to a stories where he tangles with super-villains。 It is well written and well drawn, with good characters and a plot that moves at a good pace。

I was very impressed by this 2 story collection。 The title story follows Batman’s first encounter with the Joker which is a solid read。 The second story called made of wood was my favorite as it is more of a detective story and uses the original green lantern (not Hal Jordan) and the team up was unique and unexpected。 Both were very well done。

This book is devided in two parts and only first part is about Joker and called "The man who laughs"。 My rating 4 Star is based on first part of the book。 This was a fun and fast paced story, it's about first confrontation of Batman with Joker。 Joker has murdered many people recently in Gotham and he starts to target some bigger names of Gotham one by one and even plans to kill the whole city so It's up to Batman to stop this maniac。 Plot of this book was very similar to Christopher Nolan's Dark This book is devided in two parts and only first part is about Joker and called "The man who laughs"。 My rating 4 Star is based on first part of the book。 This was a fun and fast paced story, it's about first confrontation of Batman with Joker。 Joker has murdered many people recently in Gotham and he starts to target some bigger names of Gotham one by one and even plans to kill the whole city so It's up to Batman to stop this maniac。 Plot of this book was very similar to Christopher Nolan's Dark knight (2008)。 The artwork is very fitting and shows the brutality of joker very well。 It was also my first book written by Ed Brubaker and it didn't disappoint me。 Overall it's a fun and fast paced short comic, fans of Batman and Joker should definitely check it, Thanks! 。。。more

Although I love graphic novels, I’m not much of a superheroes fan, mainly because they have dominated/ruined cinema as far as I’m concerned。 Anyway… I read this at my son’s urging and these are my thoughts。This volume is actually divided into 2 separate stories and initially I found that quite confusing, not because they are separate stories but because the police chief is a young(ish) man in the first but has has already aged and retired in the second。 Confusingly, Batman/Bruce seems to have st Although I love graphic novels, I’m not much of a superheroes fan, mainly because they have dominated/ruined cinema as far as I’m concerned。 Anyway… I read this at my son’s urging and these are my thoughts。This volume is actually divided into 2 separate stories and initially I found that quite confusing, not because they are separate stories but because the police chief is a young(ish) man in the first but has has already aged and retired in the second。 Confusingly, Batman/Bruce seems to have stayed the same age throughout! If you can ignore this paradox, then you are in for a treat, with the introduction of the Joker to Gotham in story 1 and the reopening of a cold case involving the Green Lantern in story 2。 The artwork is, as expected, amazing, beautifully imagined, realised and coloured。 The Joker is a gift of a character, which is why so many famous faces have been persuaded to play him and the artists clearly relish creating him here。 If anything, this is the puzzle of Batman for me, in that there is so much enjoyment in the depiction of the villains he engages with but there’s only so much you can do with a black and grey muscle suit and a chiselled jaw! This volume also specifically lays out the difference between Batman and other superheroes - he is a detective without superpowers and therefore theoretically much easier for a reader to identify with。 Maybe if you have Kardashian-level income, otherwise I’m personally sceptical…🤔🤨 。。。more

The first story with the joker is decent but the second story with old school Green Lantern was boring and pointless hell。

Delegate Zerø

A competent story, but not enough Batman on Joker action here for me to call this a definitive origin of their iconic dalliance。

A great start and one defiantly worth reading。

You need to read the deluxe edition because Gotham Noir is great! It wasn’t included before and it’s the best story out of the 3。 Made of Wood was a close 2nd and the main story was my least likable。

One of my favourite joker stories。Batman: The man who laughs is set directly after year one and is the first canonical appearance of the joker。The book really captures the feel of year one while having it's own tone, especially with the gordon scenes and monologues。 The lettering is even imitating that of year one。 The colouring also seems to imitate year one's。 You probably should read year one before this for maybe a better experience。 It's clear while reading this that it was one of the main One of my favourite joker stories。Batman: The man who laughs is set directly after year one and is the first canonical appearance of the joker。The book really captures the feel of year one while having it's own tone, especially with the gordon scenes and monologues。 The lettering is even imitating that of year one。 The colouring also seems to imitate year one's。 You probably should read year one before this for maybe a better experience。 It's clear while reading this that it was one of the main inspirations for the critically acclaimed Dark Knight movie。 The joker here is really great and unpredictable, and he's even scary at points。 You NEVER know what he's going to do。 Brubaker's dialogue and writing just feels realistic and tangible, and he makes Bruce's struggle feel real。 If you like the joker at all, or even if you don't, you'll love this story。 The new edition of the book also includes a story with Alan Scott's green lantern, which I won't go into too much。 It's OK, but it's more on the good side than it is the bad side。 The mystery isnt that compelling but the dialogue is really great and the characters bounce off each other well。 Gordon also has an arc- but it isn't that interesting。 There is a really great moment at the end which I won't spoil, which is probably the best part of this story。Anyway, The man who laughs is so good, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes batman。 It's pretty underrated for it's greatness, even though it does have somewhat attention to it's name。This is an essential item for any Batman or joker fan。 。。。more

I started reading Batman with the New 52 era, so I haven't read any of the older comics。 I've been reading the classics or as any comics I can get a hold of。 This whole book has some great stories and art from start to finish, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough。 We start with some gruesome killing with the Joker, which seems to be the early start of when Batman first meets the Joker。 Then move onto some Noir Batman which was a fun read。 We finish off with some Detective Comics that has a team I started reading Batman with the New 52 era, so I haven't read any of the older comics。 I've been reading the classics or as any comics I can get a hold of。 This whole book has some great stories and art from start to finish, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough。 We start with some gruesome killing with the Joker, which seems to be the early start of when Batman first meets the Joker。 Then move onto some Noir Batman which was a fun read。 We finish off with some Detective Comics that has a team-up with Green Lantern Alan Scott, which showed a little bit of when Alan used to watch over Gotham。 Overall, it was fantastic and I loved learning some of the comic history between certain characters。 。。。more
